Let’s dive straight into this Violoncello da Spalla-making project starting with the shopping list.
This list includes links to our favourite suppliers. Of course, you can use any alternative you are comfortable with or just get creative. Considering it as a separate and very personal chapter, we will not mention varnish. Just keep in mind that you will also need varnish (as well as strings, a case, and possibly a bow—all these topics are widely discussed in the newsletter with constant updates, check the section “Accessories” in the menu below the head banner).
Woods for the body:
What we need is not considered standard measures from dealers, so often, you do not get a wide choice. On the other hand, you can be fortunate and find something extraordinarily beautiful by looking into a lower-choice cello wedge. In the wood dealers’ catalogue, the measures we need are usually listed as archtop guitar wood, usually cello wood cut shorter due to some imperfection. However, we recommend always writing the dealer with the correct measures needed, and you could get some excellent deals. The measures listed here are for the usual Violoncello da Spalla model. We will be more detailed regarding models in the next issue.
