Historically, building methods of a Violoncello da Spalla were various: internal mould, external mould, neck glued and nailed on ribs or no mould at all and ribs made on the back, the neck with the upper block built in (or passing through).

Today we make it using the internal mould and the neck is glued and nailed on the ribs.

This means that we first make the neck, then the ribs, we join them, then we make the back, then the top, and at last the fingerboard and fittings.

Announcements:

  1. We previously wrote that each time we would publish something, we would first raise the subscription price (only for new paying subscribers, who already subscribed to the payed newsletter will always pay the price they signed for). This time, we didn’t do it, for one reason: we are driving to London next week, to exhibit at the BVMA Makers Day on the 9th of Feb! We want to offer the possibility to luthiers attending the show to subscribe at the current price, so the price will be raised on the 10th of Feb, in the evening, when we will arrive at our hotel in Dover.

  2. As we will be on the road, expect a different schedule for our Substack of this month: you may receive newsletters in different days (not on the 10/20/30), and if you follow our NOTES feed from the Substack app, you will see postcards from our days in London.

Back to our bench now, this is the drawing of the neck, with measures:
